Lucas, Texas

As a resident of Lucas, Tx for 25 years, I admit I'm a little biased. I've loved every minute living in this small town of about 8,000 residents. It's a little "out" but not too far and that's what many people want. Lucas still has a country feel to it with open land, horses, and cattle, but there are more than 3 Million SF of retail, entertaining and dining within 10 minutes or less. Best of all, it has one of the top public school districts in the entire state year after year.

Lucas is a Little Bit City, and a Little Bit Country

As a resident of Lucas, Tx for 25 years, I admit I'm a little biased.  We've loved every minute of living in this town of about 8,000 residents.  We moved here for the same reasons as the other residents.

Lots of people say they're fed up with the traffic and congestion of the city.  They're tired of living one home on top of another.  They want to feel like they can breathe so they start to consider moving further out.

At the same time, these same people eventually come to the conclusion moving further out means a longer drive to work, shopping, and all the things the larger cities have to offer.  Just as importantly, they also want a quality education for their kids but the further out you move from the big cities the more the school systems struggle. A quality education is very expensive and the tax base just isn't there with rural property.  What many people really want is a little bit country and a little bit city and that's exactly what Lucas has to offer.

Drive around Lucas and you'll see horses, sheep or longhorn cattle grazing but you'll also see new developments with multi-million dollar homes on 2 acre lots coming out of the ground.  You'll find older, ranch style homes, some of which are being updated and some are being taken down for new homes. Lucas is in a slow transition as more and more people see the advantages of living here.

But the one thing you won't see in Lucas is apartments and Lucas wants to keep it that way.  None of Lucas is zoned for apartments nor is there public sewer to support it.  Lucas residents are extremely committed to preventing public sewer within the city except for the commercial area on the far west side.

The townspeople of Lucas are fully committed to preserving the quality of life they enjoy there.

Schools

There are six different school districts (called ISD's for Independent School Districts) serving this small town.  Depending on where a home is located, kids will attend either Lovejoy ISD, Allen ISD, McKinney ISD, Plano ISD, Princeton ISD or Wylie ISD.  This can be a real annoyance because many of the school district lines don't follow roads or natural boundaries like creeks.  They just meander through what was once undeveloped raw land without rhyme or reason.

Lovejoy ISD has always been the most high demand school district in Lucas.  All of the schools (elementary, middle, and high school) are located either in Lucas or right next door in Fairview.  Lovejoy is also one of the most highly rated public school districts in the entire state of Texas by the TEA (Texas Education Agency).  Lovejoy ISD is always right there near the top with Highland Park ISD and Carroll ISD, two other very well known and high demand school districts.

In addition to the public schools, Lucas also is home to the Lucas Christian Academy, a hybrid model school that integrates the parents (mentoring their students) in partnership with highly qualified professional instructors to gain better academic and spiritual development of the student.  Many of the students in LCA live in Lucas and prefer it over the six other public school districts.

Topography and the Trinity Trail

There are two main roads coming into Lucas, Country Club and W. Lucas Rd (which is the extension of Bethany Rd coming out of Allen).  From those two streets you really can't see much of the town and it appears pretty level and with few trees.  You have to get back into the smaller streets to find the real beauty of the town.

Lucas actually has heavily wooded areas, hills, farmland and winding streets.  It's easy to get turned around because the country roads make so many twists and turns.  But that's where all the beauty is.

Lucas is on Lake Lavon, which is 21,400 acres in size.  It's surrounded by the Army Corps of Engineer land which is left untouched.  The land is full of wildlife and will always remain that way.

Lucas residents can take advantage of the 25.5 mile long Trinity Trail winding around Lake Lavon.  The town of Lucas participates in maintenance of this unpaved trail.  It can be used for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding however no motorized vehicles are allowed.  One of the trailheads is located in Lucas.  Lucas also has a boat ramp to Lake Lavon.

One of the many things I really appreciate about living in east Lucas near Lake Lavon is the nights are dark and quiet.  You can look up and see the stars and there's no grinding traffic.  We can take walks down some of these roads and rarely see a car, but we can also be at a nice restaurant in Allen of Fairview, or even take in a hockey game, within 8-9 minutes.  How great is that?

Fun Things to do In Lucas

Once a month, from 8AM until Noon, Lucas holds it's Farmer's market.  It's a fun place to find fresh vegetables and all kinds of food and crafts.  It's grown quite a bit since 2021 when I shot this this video but I'll be updating it soon.

Most people living in Lucas probably don't even know the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center exists because it does wonderful work in rehabilitation of injured raptors.  Here's a video I recorded long ago in 2016 but I'm sure they've grown tremendously.  I will be visiting it again for an update, but here's a link to their website which current.
