Wylie Independent School District website: www.wylieisd.net
The Wylie Independent School District offers a wide range of educational opportunities and a tradition of academic excellence. The district and individual students annually receive numerous awards and honors both academic and extracurricular. On the Texas Education Agency Accountability reports, nine WISD schools are rated as “recognized” and one as “excellent,” giving the district an overall rating of “recognized.” Wylie students also score above state and national averages on SAT and ACT college entrance exams. Based on their performance on the PSAT exam, some students are recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Each year, WISD seventh grade students who perform well above their grade level on the PSAT exam are recognized by the Duke University Talent Identification Program. In fine arts, career programs, Air Force Junior ROTC and academic University Interscholastic League programs, Wylie students receive state and national recognition in competition with students from other districts. Wylie students have the opportunity to learn about the latest in technology due to the outstanding programs offered in the district, many of which are funded by the Birmingham Land Trust. The Trust provides hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to the WISD and its students. The Wylie ISD Education Foundation, Inc. provides enrichment to students in grades Pre-K through 12 and teachers. The Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, accepts donations and gifts from individuals, corporations, businesses, trusts and investments. With a current enrollment of more than 10,000 students, Wylie ISD continues its fast-paced growth. Through continued support of the community, the district has recently opened in August 2006 Cooper Junior High School, located at Hensley Lane and Hooper Road. Three schools are projected to open in the fall of 2007, Wylie East High School, Dr. Al Draper Intermediate and Rita G. Smith Elementary School.
