Be Careful Where You Buy Your Mulch
Kelli Billingsley was kind enough to send this information to me about this potential problem with mulch. I visited the website address (listed below) and it is true. After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the fallen trees were turned into mulch. There are tons and tons of that mulch out there that may be coming this way. The only downside? Formosan Termites will be a bonus in many of those bags.
The New Orleans area is one of the few parts of the country where the Formosan Termite has flourished. Many of the trees blown down were already badly infested with them. These termites can eat a house in no time and there apparently is no good control against them. You certainly don't want to be introducing them into your beds!
So know where the mulch you are buying is coming from. And if you think you are getting a steal on mulch, you should be doubly careful. Tell your friends and neighbors about the situation.
