After more than a year of planning, developers will break ground today in the Collin County town of Fairview on the first phase of a 200-acre shopping, office and residential complex.  The Village at Fairview is a project of Dallas-based MGHerring Group.  It is located at the northeast corner of North Central Expressway and Stacy Road.

The open-air retail center will be anchored by Dillard's, Macy's and J.C. Penney department stores.  It is scheduled to open in late 2008.  Additional shops and restaurants, a movie theater, hotel, apartments and office space are also planned in the sprawling project.

Designed by JPRA Architects, the complex is patterned after traditional urban retail districts and includes public plazas, sculptures and fountains.  "The Village at Fairview will provide our residents with convenient access to upscale shopping, dining and entertainment while also offering much needed office and residential space," town Mayor Sim Israeloff said in a statement released Tuesday.

"The MGHerring Group has worked hard to reflect the historic, upscale setting that distinguishes the town of Fairview."  The development is being built in a partnership between MGHerring and a unit of Prudential Insurance.  The partnership is also building a 200-acre development across the street in the city of Allen.  Together the projects are planned for almost 3 million square feet.

Some day it will be fun (and a little sad) to look back on what this land looked like before development
